Brave Space Training for Communities, Workplaces, and Faith Spaces

Welcome Friend Association provides practical, story-informed training that helps leaders build safer, more affirming spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ people — especially in rural and Northern communities.

What Is Brave Space Training?

Brave Space Training goes beyond basic “awareness” workshops. We invite participants to explore language, assumptions, and real-life scenarios — with space for questions, reflection, and growth. Our goal is to equip people with tools they can actually use in their day-to-day work and relationships.

Sessions can be adapted for staff teams, boards, volunteers, congregations, youth leaders, unions, and community partners who want to better support 2SLGBTQ+ youth, seniors, families, and allies.

Training Formats We Offer

Intro to 2SLGBTQ+ Inclusion

A foundation-level session that covers key terms, identities, and concepts, along with respectful (and real-world) language, pronouns, and what to do when you make a mistake.

Brave Spaces in Faith Communities

Designed for congregations and faith leaders who want to live their values of welcome and justice, while addressing the harm many queer and trans people have experienced in religious settings.

Youth-Focused & School-Based Workshops

Workshops tailored for educators, youth workers, and student leaders, with practical strategies for supporting queer and trans students and creating safer classroom and camp environments.

Topics We Can Explore Together

Each training is adapted to your context, but common focus areas include:

  • Understanding sex, gender, sexual orientation, and diverse identities
  • Brave Space vs. “safe space” — what’s the difference and why it matters
  • How language, policies, and everyday practices impact 2SLGBTQ+ people
  • Supporting youth and seniors navigating unsupportive environments
  • Responding to resistance, pushback, or difficult questions
  • Practical next steps you can take after the workshop

We bring stories and learning from programs like Rainbow Camp® and Rainbow Online Connection, connecting training content directly to real experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ youth, seniors, and families.
